Welcome to the Mighty Oak Rabbitry webpage. I am Carl Richetelle of Wolcott, Connecticut. Wolcott is located in Central Connecticut nestled in-between Waterbury, Cheshire and Southington. I live on Hitchcock Lake, a small but picturesque body of water. I began to raise rabbits way back in 1973 with a few Dutch and Tans. It was in 1975 I found myself in love with the little “Gem”, the Netherland Dwarf. I purchased a Ruby Eye White senior doe and a Siamese Sable senior buck from Ina Mae Schmidt. Ina Mae and her husband Harold took me to all the local shows. To the chagrin of my mom, my rabbitry grew and grew to over 125 holes. After a long stint of raising French and Mini Lops, I settled in on Netherlands exclusively for many many years.
My Dwarfs have followed me as I moved residences, even taking over the spare bathroom. Today they are housed in a small garage.
Sometime in 2001 fellow exhibitors begged me to get into Polish rabbits so they would have a third exhibitor to show against. Since the Broken variety had not yet been introduced into the Netherland family of colors, I chose to raise the broken color in Polish and still have them today.
I have raised most colors of Dwarfs but specialized in Himalayan, Siamese Sable, Chestnut and Ruby Eye Whites. I currently have REW’s, Black, Chestnut, Otter, Black Silver Marten, Brokens and keep a few of whatever pops out of the nest box!
Breeding and exhibiting rabbits has given me so many friends from around this country and beyond. Going to shows has been a rewarding experience for me over the years.
